For The More Patient & Detailed Customer Here Is A Full Description-
Our Rebuild Procedure - We've been rebuilding these for years and have never had a failure. It's all in the prep work and the special epoxy we use.
These flywheels are stripped of their magnets and sand blasted to bare metal. Acid etched and neutralized, then we use a Zirconium Chromate PPG Epoxy (this is the best corrosion inhibiting epoxy available on the market)
Once they are coated we carefully space and align the magnets to factory standards with a special bonding epoxy. Then it gets another coat of Zirconium Chromate Epoxy over the magnets. Then it gets a High Grade Black Urethane top coat to match factory esthetics. This Process is very time consuming and tedious and we have it down to a science as you can see.
Our Warranty- We give a 2 Year Warranty on everything we rebuild at our facility. Frankly flywheels should never go bad, they should just spin. With the type of process we have, a rebuilt flywheel from us should last almost indefinitely and if the factory had our standards this would have never become an issue.
Do I need to Replace my stator ? As long as the Copper Windings are not pieced or broken your stator should be fine. These tend to last the life of the engine unless you have a catastrophic failure with magnets coming loose etc.
The stator core is made of stamped steel and does expand and shed off rust this can be problematic overtime. The flywheel should be carefully wire wheeled to remove the majority of the rust and oxidation and then coated in cosmoline.
Do not sand blast stator or chemically wash it. Cosmoline will help insulate the steel core and the tackiness will help keep any rust particles from shedding off and latching onto the flywheel magnets. Cosmoline is as sold by CRC under the name (Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor) Its cheap and you should own a few cans of it for anything that you see that's rusting wether it be your trailer or anchor or stator.
Why Did My Flywheel Fail ? These systems are air-cooled and tend to suck in salty mist when running and overtime that salt will accumulate on the stator and flywheel and rust it to bits and delaminate the magnets and cause catastrophic damage.
Boats especially with a transducer throwing up salt spray can help accelerate this process. Eventually all of these flywheels will go bad even the ones in freshwater with time will begin to delaminate and oxidize over years and years. If they were simply coated from the factory this would not be an issue.
Was This A Bad Design ? This Design is a very advanced charging system and is great and reliable overall it produces a massive amount of power. The idea is great but the execution was lacking in hindsight of corrosion etc.
Prevention Moving Forward- After a flywheel rebuild and a good cleaning of the stator and a coating of Cosmoline this should last indefinitely.
Do I Need To Reset The Timing On The Engine? If you go by the book you should always retime an engine after the flywheel was pulled off the crankshaft. In my experience I've almost never had to adjust timing as long as you did not replace the flywheel and or the keyway.
If you have any issues with the keyway alignment you should most definitely retime the engine. Do not take a chance with preignition. But with that being said if you pull the flywheel and get it back you should be able to drop it on and go.
The reason for timing an engine when replacing the flywheel with another is they are not manufactured in the same time frame by the same machine perhaps, it could have been warmer out or a different operator was running the machine when it was cut or the machine was worn a bit and the specs shifted a slight bit. Manufacturing is a very intense process and tolerances can change very easily that is why we time an engine when we replace a flywheel. If you have twins or trips please mark them prior to sending them. Again the book says recheck timing but if you are installing the same flywheel it will be the same.
Small Block E-tec / Eagle / 60 Degree - These flywheels are bolted on and this design has been around since the early 90s. Please make sure you torque all bolts in a gradual torque sequence lock tight is required on these bolts as well. Do not skip this step.

Brian Kleissler Sent 2 60° E-Tec fly wheels to five star they were returned with too much paint on the magnets and fly wheels would not fit over stators, waiting for a resolution from five star

Customer Had 2 tilt/trim units rebuilt on my twin etecs. That was 3 years ago and are working better than new. The guys at 5 star are honest and when they say it's a 5 day turnaround, they mean it. Need to have 1 of my flywheels rebuilt and will be sending it out this week with full confidence it will be perfect! They deserve a 10 star rating.
